Practical Guide: Sizing Compactor Garbage Trucks (8–22 m³) for Municipal Services

Modernizing waste management services in Moldova’s municipalities and districts is a strategic priority, supported by Law no. 209/2016 on Waste and by local development projects. Correctly sizing the capacity of compactor garbage trucks cuts operational fuel costs by up to 40% and optimizes daily collection routes.

1. Compaction Ratio and Hydraulic Efficiency

Unlike conventional special vehicles without compaction, modern compactor garbage trucks use a hydraulic packing system with an articulated plate, achieving a compaction ratio of between 1:3 and 1:6 (depending on the density of household or recyclable waste). This allows an effective volume of up to 6 times greater than the hopper’s nominal capacity to be transported.

2. Leachate Management and Environmental Protection

Under the requirements of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate (IPM), compactor garbage trucks must be fully sealed to prevent the accidental discharge of liquids from waste (leachate) onto public roads. HOWO and Sinotruk special vehicles are fitted with:

  • Corrosion- and organic-acid-resistant rubber seals around the entire perimeter of the rear hopper.
  • An integrated leachate collection tank beneath the hopper, fitted with a quick-drain valve and a cleaning port.
  • A stainless-steel drainage channel directing condensate into the sealed tank.

3. Universal Loading Mechanisms (Euro Containers)

The hydraulic lifting system at the rear of the compactor garbage truck is compatible with all standard container types used in the Republic of Moldova:

  • Standard plastic Euro bins: 120 L, 240 L and 360 L (comb-type lift).
  • Large-capacity metal and plastic containers: 1,100 L (trunnion-type side-arm and comb lift).
  • Optional: A tipping device for large skip-type containers (3–5 m³) for industrial sites.
